Sometimes some of our best learning occurs outside the classroom walls.  Today 5th graders at PMS got to enjoy a trip to the Peterstown Library thanks to levy funds.  As an extra treat to celebrate the first day of spring, they also traveled to Dairy Queen where each child got a free ice cream cone.  We would like to thank the citizens of Monroe County for voting for a levy which allows our students to experience a myriad of learning environments and to the Dairy Queen employees who made our kiddos smile with a tasty frozen treat! It’s always a great day to be a Pirate!!

Last week, long time FFA and 4-H ham, bacon and egg supporter and SinksGrove native,Tina Canterbury Tuckwiller lost her battle with ALS.  Her family has began the process of starting a memorial fund to assist a deserving participant in the swine programs offered in the Greenbrier Valley.  Spearheaded by Monroe County FFA member Emma Ballard and followed by Monroe County member Cole Martin and Greenbrier East FFA member Haley Elmore.  These three FFA members chose to sell their eggs to benefit this Memorial fund.  Three dozen were sold by theses members raising over $1500.00 for the fund.  Let’s take a moment to recognize these young people and their thoughtfulness for this family.  Anyone wishing to donate to this fund may do so at the Bank of Monroe.

MCTC’c JROTC competed at Glen Jean in Drill Competition and individual “knock out” drills. For knock-out, cadets must correctly execute commands given in a rapid sequence. Any error eliminates that cadet. The Maverick Battalion earned 2nd place squad, 2nd place platoon, 2nd place overall. In knockout, Eli Thomas 10th, Deven McLean 4th, Jacob Proffitt 3rd. Congratulations MCTC JROTC! #WVEd

James Monroe High School's Team 1, consisting of Madisen McMillion, Elizabeth Adkins, Cole Thomas and Bryceson Whitt, advanced out of the fourth regional of the 2023 Academic Showdown at a competition at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia on 18 February 2023. The team earned a spot in the finale on March 31, 2023, at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston by besting fifteen other teams from nine schools. This is the first time the Maverick Academic Showdown Team has competed, which adds to the achievement. The Monroe County Board of Education recognized this excellence on 7 March 2023 with certificates for each team member. The Showdown is an academic head-to-head competition testing students’ knowledge in subject areas including math, history, sports, fine arts and more. Students in grades 9 -12 may participate, and schools may enter up to two teams to compete in the double elimination regionals. The statewide 2023 field of competitors includes 71 teams from 40 high schools representing 26 counties – an increase of 51 teams over last year.
