Mountain View Elementary and Middle School participated in a RUCK MARCH Friday, April 19th to show support for the military child, our active-duty service men and women and our local Veterans. Students in grades K-8 marched down and back Main Street Union wearing military green shirts, waving American Flags donated by David, Morrissey, Colonel, USAG (Ret) and now Marketing Manager Lead for USAA. Students sported back packs, lanyards, and arm bands donated by Steven Queen, WV ARMY National Guard, Family Programs Director. JMHS/MCTC JROTC Cadets led by instructors MSG Michael Wiley (Ret) and MAJ Todd Longanacre. West Virginia State Police and Monroe County Sheriff's office including Mountain View PRO Officer Phillip Wickline ensured security of the Ruck March. West Virginia Department of Education representative Harrison Evans assisted with photos and video. Mayor Caroline Sparks helped organize the event from the Town of Union's point of view to ensure student safety.
Mountain View School is designated as a Purple Star School, indicating that our school puts a concerted effort into supporting the military child, our active-duty service men and women and our local veterans. The Mountain View Ruck March fell on Friday April 19th, 2024, to honor the military child, to support our local veterans and active duty and to promote civic pride. Mountain View faculty members under the direction of Principal Pam Dunford were instrumental in organizing and supporting the Ruck March. Many Mountain View faculty have immediate family members who have served or are currently serving in a branch of the military.
As April is the month of the Military Child, Mountain View students simulated a "Ruck March" which is used in military basic training to test physical ability and mental stability. In the U.S. ARMY, for example, a soldier ruck marches 12 miles in 3 hours with a weighted backpack and gear. Our students, in a symbolic gesture, marched 1.6 miles without weighted gear. Local Veterans led by LTC Scott Womack (Ret) and American Legion Post 100 led our Ruck March. Many students had a family member who was active duty or a veteran ruck march with them through the Town of Union.
Congratulations to Dylan Johnson!

Please be aware that the HVAC system at James Monroe High School is currently being replaced. They are working in the evenings and nights on it. CASTO, another HVAC company worked the majority of the day to fix many of the issues. The school did have cooler air moving through it by the afternoon. We appreciate our teachers and staff that helped try and keep it cool today.
