Congratulations to the 2023 Model UN participants and their recognition at the WV Senate and Monroe County Board of Education for all of their accomplishments.
James Monroe High School's Team 1, consisting of Madisen McMillion, Elizabeth Adkins, Cole Thomas and Bryceson Whitt, advanced out of the fourth regional of the 2023 Academic Showdown at a competition at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia on 18 February 2023. The team earned a spot in the finale on March 31, 2023, at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston by besting fifteen other teams from nine schools. This is the first time the Maverick Academic Showdown Team has competed, which adds to the achievement. The Monroe County Board of Education recognized this excellence on 7 March 2023 with certificates for each team member.
The Showdown is an academic head-to-head competition testing students’ knowledge in subject areas including math, history, sports, fine arts and more. Students in grades 9 -12 may participate, and schools may enter up to two teams to compete in the double elimination regionals. The statewide 2023 field of competitors includes 71 teams from 40 high schools representing 26 counties – an increase of 51 teams over last year.
This is an updated message for Tuesday, March 14, 2023, Monroe County Schools will be closed.
For Tuesday, March 14th, Monroe County Schools will operate on a 2 hour delay.
James Monroe High School Honorary Secretaries of State
James Monroe High School Seniors Braydie Carr and Luke Jackson were recognized as Honorary Secretaries of State for their efforts in registering 100% of the eligible members of the Senior Class to vote. This qualified JMHS for the Jennings Randolph Award, named for the U.S. Senator from West Virginia who spearheaded the effort to lower the voting age to eighteen. WV Secretary of State Mac Warner spoke with the students in his office and accompanied them to the Senate chamber, where they were recognized at the behest of Senate President Craig Blair and Senators Jack Woodrum and Vince Deeds.
Registering to vote is only the first step, however. Failing to take the next step and actually vote denies our community, state, and country the voices it needs to accurately reflect the population. Voter participation in our community was only 49% in the 2022 mid-term elections. Let’s keep the momentum these young leaders have started going!
Reminder that tomorrow is a teacher work day and there will be no school for students.
Congratulations to both Peterstown History Bowl Teams as they advance to states in April!
MCTC students have been busy, as usual, this week. Mrs. Bradley’s freshman intro to careers class explored some “sticky” situations as they answered questions on Post-it notes, then later collected their responses on larger posters around the classroom. The activity provided interactions and thought-provoking conversations. Mrs. Hodges, meanwhile, had her freshman group complete an interactive assignment using technology and the popular Kahoot platform. Carpentry students worked collaboratively to construct hunting blinds. The blinds will be available for purchase.
Marshal White, Danni Dunbar, Alexis Broyles, Tripp McMillion, Kiersten Nelson, and Madison Hanson along with several James Monroe students participated in the YLA Model United Nations at the University of Charleston today. They are to be commended on their hard work and success in the program.
This is a reminder that Monday, March 13th is a professional learning day for staff and there will be no school for students.
