The attached is an article about the selection of twelve JMHS students to attend the Harvard Model UN Conference, for which our school qualified.
The following is an Op-Ed explaining the value of Model UN:
The success of James Monroe High School’s (JMHS) Model United Nations (MUN) Debate Team in a series of prestigious conferences may leave readers wondering what it’s all about and why it is worthy of study. Whatever one’s opinion of the UN, it is a fact and, like the weather, is best approached in a spirit of inquiry rather than ignorance or denial. Those opposed to the UN and what it stands for will surely benefit from the adage that it is wise to “know your enemy.” Those who have no opinion of it will agree that learning to use membership in it to gain an advantage on the world stage at least does no harm and may prove useful. Those who stand with the UN and its values already understand that learning more about the UN’s strengths and limitations is a useful exercise. The JMHS MUN program approaches the UN from such a spirit of inquiry and seeks greater understanding of it and the issues it addresses rather than “for” or “against” indoctrination.
